“Uncut Gems" delivers a fast-paced anxious boiling pile of entertainment that is elevated by a great turn by Adam Sandler and stylish sense of direction.
#9: “The Two Popes”
“The Two Popes” is an absorbing drama of religion and friendship that is shown for what it is from great writing and a pair of excellent leads in Pryce and Hopkins.
#8: "Little Women”
“Little Women" is a heartwarming piece of finding the inner happiness in one's self, which is showcased wonderfully and emotionally satisfying through the efforts of strong writing and direction and a well-rounded ensemble; particularly in Saorise Ronan.
#7: “The Irishman”
“The Irishman” showcases the brilliance of Scorsese behind the camera once again with the help of stellar writing from Zaillian, sleek production design, and outstanding work from Pacino and Pesci.
#6: “Midsommar”
“Midsommar” is a horror that is highly engaging, extremely well acted and a disturbing piece that will keep you wanting more and will leave a lasting impression when it is all over.
#5: “The Farewell”
“The Farewell” is an emotionally-charged telling of family and tradition that makes you laugh and cry in all the right moments due to a great ensemble and a special lead in Awkwafina.
#4: “Light From Light”
“Light From Light” is a slow burn drama that instantly hooks you and never lets you go thanks greatly to great pacing and an amazing performance from Marin Ireland.
#3: “Parasite”
“Parasite” is a multi-layered thematic masterpiece that is full of twists and turns that keeps you on the edge of your seat coupled with an amazing ensemble, gorgeous production design and fantastic direction from Joon-Ho.
#2: “The Lighthouse”
“The Lighthouse” is an atmospheric horror that perfectly gets under your skin and stays with you after your viewing; boasted by incredible work from both Pattinson and Dafoe, great direction from Eggers and a feeling that only true horrors can give you when walking out.
#1: “Marriage Story”
"Marriage Story" is a wonderful piece of work that delivers in all the right ways. I never found myself bored or critical in any areas. From its remarkable performances to its stellar direction and its immersive soundtrack, this is, without a doubt, the best that 2019 has to offer.
