One of the most notable names, notable for all the wrong reasons, in the film industry would be none other than Michael Bay. The man behind the “Bad Boys” and “Transformers” series has returned to directing duties with a action-packed thriller entitled “6 Underground”, which was released on Netflix this weekend.
“6 Underground” tells the story of six rogues who label themselves as “ghosts” who help in fighting, as the film describes it, “real evil” in our world.
Michael Bay has been trashed left and right by many film lovers and audience members. I have been a defender of Bay as I believe that he has the potential to crack something that can put him on track as he has lots of talent in creating a pretty visual picture and entertaining action pieces. And while those elements are clearly here, there is no doubt in my mind that this is, out of the films I've seen of his, the worst that he has produced.
For starters, this is an overly-styled picture that plays around one too many angles for one sequence that gave me both a headache and frustration in the first 40 minutes of the film. The splash of visuals might be appealing to some however for myself was insanely distracting.
Secondly, as overly-styled it is, it is borderline insulting how overly edited this is. There are so many cuts in a sequence that made me so mad. There are never frames that are taken out from his previous work that are used in this film. There are many cuts of which that didn’t need to be there at all and could help greatly with my next issue, which is the pacing.
The pacing here is extremely quick and never gives itself time to breathe nor give proper development for the six characters we are following. The most development was given to Reynolds, who also felt miscast.
It’s also hard to tell what the tone of this is suppose to be. There are many moments that I can’t tell were meant to be comedic or serious and it bothered me a great deal. Even the moments that were meant for one thing over the other never functioned fully.
Lastly, the music is overused and annoying as hell. The use of modern music blended into the action could have been a good way to introduce the film’s tone but it never sticks the landing.
I think, at this point, you can clearly tell how I feel about “6 Underground”. It’s one of the worst films of the year and quite frankly I’m not mad at this film. I’m disappointed as I was hoping for a resurgence for Bay and it seems that that moment has yet to come
“6 Underground” Grade: D-
