Knives Out Review - An All In Ensemble Wrapped In Clever Writing

Rian Johnson has had an interesting time these past two years as a filmmaker. Coming off the ride that was "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", both literally and figuratively, Johnson returns to more familiar territory with his latest feature entitled "Knives Out".

"Knives Out" presents a whodunit type story set in the modern day with an ensemble of characters that pits each one against each other in solving the case of who murdered the father of their home.

When walking in, I wasn't sure how to feel due to a lack of great marketing to appeal to myself. And I can now happily state that this was a really great time and a very fun ride.

The ensemble is, besides "Parasite", the best I've seen all year. Every performer came to play and no one was ever left out or reserving. The standouts for myself would be in Ana De Armas and Daniel Craig.

The other great aspect of it is its writing. This was a very cleverly written mystery as it should have been. The basis of any mystery is to have you keep guessing and the film understands this completely and takes full advantage of this and adds more to it.

The production design is also stylish and fascinating to explore. The interior of the house was an interesting place to wander around and helped in establishing the tone of the film.

I honestly don't have many complaints for this particular piece. "Knives Out" is one of the most entertaining films of the year coupled with one of the best ensembles that elevated every scene they're in with the help of a cleverly written mystery.

"Knives Out" Grade: A-
