After the huge comic-book movie event that was Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios releases their last feature film for the year of 2018: Ant Man & The Wasp. While Ant-Man was a joint collaboration between Edgar Wright and Peyton Reed, the sequel is now under Peyton Reed’s vision. The film stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Hannah John-Kamen, Walton Goggins and Michelle Pfeiffer. So, how was the film? Is the sequel better than the original? Let’s find out.

Ant Man & The Wasp takes place two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Scott Lang is under house arrest and is brought back into action as Ant-Man-with a new partner named The Wasp- when the mysterious villain known as Ghost comes to town.

Just like the original, the sequel is very funny. The humor works very well and doesn’t feel forced into the film like some of the other MCU movies. It is also the calmest marvel sequel that we have gotten so far. There is no “end of the world” type of situation and feels smaller in scale, which works out very well. The Wasp is the absolute standout of the film. She is very cool with the use of her suit and abilities. Speaking of abilities, the use of the tech was used very creatively just like the original. There are some very funny moments with the tech and some very creative ones as well.

Even though the film has its positives, it also has its negatives as well. For starters, Ghost was not a well-made villain. She was given a decent backstory; but her present self was not. She is more shown as a anti-hero rather than a villain. Also, Walton Goggins’s character had no purpose to be in the film at all. Because of his character getting a lot of screen time, he is what ultimately kills Ghost’s character. Without him, there could have been more screen time given to Ghost. Also, some aspects and plot points are not fully explained in the film. There are some things presented in the film that are not explained at all and the film just assumes that the audience knows what those particular aspects are.

In the end, Ant-Man & The Wasp is a fun ride with entertaining action scenes, good chemistry between Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, and lots of funny moments with the shrinking technology. It unfortunately suffers from unexplained story elements, bland villain and a completely useless character. It’s still worth checking out and make sure to stay till after the credits as you always do.
