In the wake of the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm and Disney have confirmed that all of their spin-off projects have now been put on hold. There are many factors as to why they have decided to make this decision. All of them lead back to their latest installment in their growing franchise.
Box Office Numbers
Below this, i left a look of the box office from the past 3 Star Wars films(from Rogue One to Solo). See how the numbers of Solo: A Star Wars Story compare to the other two movies that came before:
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Budget: $200 Million
Opening Weekend: $155 Million
Week 4: $424 Million Domestically
Total: $1.05 Billion
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Budget: $217 Million
Opening Weekend: $220 Million
Week 4: $517 Million Domestically
Total: $1.3 Billion
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Budget: $275 Million
Opening Weekend: $84.4 Million
Week 4: $192.8 Million Domestically
Total(So Far): $339.5 Million
As you can see, Solo: A Star Wars Story has taken a massive hit at the box office, barely bringing in $300 Million. Compared to Rogue One, it is a huge misfire in terms of a Star Wars spin-off. As a normal blockbuster, it’s doing fine; but is doing poorly for Star Wars standards
Release Date
The usual tradition with the release of Star Wars films nowadays are that they are always meant to be holiday season releases. However, Lucasfilm decided to make Solo a summer release; competing in the month of May, which was when Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War were still fresh and new at the theaters. The results were not met well as you can see from the box office numbers.
So, What Happens Now?
For starters, all of the spin-off projects have been either shut down in pre-production or have been put on hold. The spin-off projects that we know are put on hold are Obi-Wan and Boba Fett. Both films were in pre-production stages. James Mangold, the director of Logan, has been hired to direct and write Boba Fett. No director has been announced for Obi-Wan.
According to reports, Lucasfilm is now directing their attention towards Episode 9 and their upcoming trilogies. All focus, as of now, is all being put towards Star Wars: Episode 9 , which is being directed by JJ Abrams and comes out next year. They are also planning out the early stages for one of their slated upcoming trilogies. One trilogy is being worked on by Rian Johnson and the other is being worked on by Game Of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. It is most likely that Lucasfilm will focus on Rian Johnson’s trilogy first right after work on Episode 9 is done.
