After 14 years of waiting and much anticipation, the long-awaited sequel to 2004’s The Incredibles has finally arrived. The original has been widely praised as one of the best superhero films ever made. So, you could say that the sequel has a lot to live up to. The film stars Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, Bob Odenkirk and Sarah Vowell. Brad Bird returns to direct and write the sequel. Does the sequel live up to expectations? Let’s find out.
Incredibles 2 picks up right after the original. Heroes are still considered illegal in the world. Now, instead of Mr. Incredible being in the spotlight, Elastigirl is brought out to stop crime while Mr. Incredible stays home to watch the kids.
The film delivers in many different ways. For starters, it is visually stunning and impressive. The animation is slick and stylish. It is some of the best animation I have ever seen in a Pixar film. It also builds off from the original. Instead of simply taking place years later, the film starts right where the first one left off. All of the original characters feel like they have never left and feel like they have naturally grown from the original. Also, all of the new characters worked and didn’t interfere with the flow of the narrative. Jack Jack is the standout and is absolutely hilarious. Speaking of being hilarious, the film is incredibly funny. See what I did there. The action scenes are fun and super engaging. With the help of an awesome soundtrack, the action scenes are energetic and feel like a roller coaster ride type experience.
The only negative that the film had was the story structure. If you have seen the original, it is basically the same narrative but flipped. It doesn’t mean it is a terrible plot; it only means that there are lots of similarities to the original as a whole.
Besides that, the film is incredibly well-crafted and well worth the wait. It is super funny, action-packed and visually impressive. Also, the short film entitled Bao was super emotional and powerful. It made me cry when I saw it. Go see this film as soon as possible.
