When Spider-Man entered the MCU in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, audience members and comic book fans have been highly anticipating his own solo film in the Marvel universe. Now, the web slinger returns in his new solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. The film stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. Is the film any good? How does it compare to the other Spider-Man movies? Let’s find out
Spider-Man: Homecoming tells the story of Peter Parker(played by Tom Holland) living his teenager double life as a loser in his high school and a citywide popular superhero, Spider-Man. With some help from his mentor, Tony Stark aka Iron Man(played by Robert Downey Jr), Peter could finally find his place as a superhero and defeat the menacing Vulture(played by Michael Keaton).
The film delivers on great amounts of acton. The action scenes are very fun and make you feel like you are slinging around with Spider-Man. The scenes are also very self-contained, meaning that they keep the action in a little smaller scale than rather being big and huge action like in The Avengers.
Tom Holland is, in my opinion, the best Spider-Man we have gotten on the big screen yet. He delivers the teenage attitude that Spider-Man has and the comedic beats this character has. His suit is gorgeous to look at and is probably the best live action Spider-Man suit yet.
Michael Keaton is, in my opinion, one of the best Marvel villains in the MCU so far. His character, The Vulture, has a very menacing appearance and is definitely a good starting villain for Spider-Man in his early teenage years.
The film also delivers on the humor and comedy. For this film, the tone needed to be comedic and funny becuase of the character we are dealing with. The film delivered greatly on the comedy. There are some genuinely funny moments that will make this film stand out from other Marvel movies.
Even though the film has lots of positives, there are some signs of improvements that i personally noticed. One of them is Zendaya’s character. Her character wasn’t really needed in the film and didn’t serve any purpose in the context of the story. The same thing can be said for Aunt May(played by Marisa Tomei). Her appearance wasn’t significant and didn’t really add anything for the character Spider-Man or the story.
The other negative is the story itself. The story is very simple and very easy to follow. That might sound weird considering that most Marvel movies are simple to follow, but there lies the problem. The formula Marvel likes to use in their movies is three simple things. Those three are big action scenes, lots of comedy and make it family friendly. I really hope that the formula starts to change after Phase 3 and they start branching out to different tones like potential R-rated films.
Besides that, I found myself really enjoying Spider-Man: Homecoming. In my opinion, it is tied with Spider-Man 2 for being the best Spider-Man movie. It has great action, great characters and memorable funny moments. It goes without saying that i recommend you going to see this film. Don’t miss this one guys, it’s a good movie, but not amazing(pun not intended).
Spider-Man: Homecoming Overall Score: 8.5/10=85%
Reasoning: Tom Holland’s performance as Spider-Man, great action and comedy
