3 Reasons Why Geostorm Will Probably Be Bad

This morning, Warner Bros Pictures released the 2nd trailer to their upcoming disaster film, Geostorm. The film is set to be released on October 20th and stars Gerard Butler and Ed Harris. The 1st teaser for the film gave me some interest for the project. The new trailer, however, now gives me a clear view as to how this film is probably going to turn out. Here are a few reasons why i believe Geostorm is probably going to be a bad film.

  1. The plot looks generic and boring

When it comes to disaster films, it’s really hard to create a story that is both interesting and different from other disaster films. All of these types of films have big action set pieces, worldwide destruction and loads of CGI. A great film example is San Andreas. While the film was based on a real disaster, it still follows the same beats as a disaster film would have. With Geostorm, the plot looks exactly the same as San Andreas and any other disaster film ever made.

2. There is no marketing appeal for this film

Even though the film can use big action set pieces(and the producer who gave us Independence Day) in their marketing campaign, i don’t believe the general public will be that interested in seeing the film. The only reason why the last disaster film, San Andreas, made money and had good marketing was because of Dwayne Johnson. In this film, besides Gerard Butler and Eugenio Derbez, there isn’t any big names starring in this film. Without some big names, the appeal factor for the film isn’t going to work

3. The box office take is probably going to be low

To clarify, i don’t mean that the film is not going to make money. I believe the film will make a good amount of money on opening weekend. But, i believe it will a massive drop the following weekend. I’m estimating that the drop will be around 60-70%. I don’t believe it will have a 70-80% drop like Transformers: The Last Knight did(horrible movie by the way).

To be honest, I never was interested for Geostorm nor do i believe the general public is either. If the film turns out to be good and makes a good amount of money, then it will show us that the public is still wanting to see these types of films regardless of the cast and plot.
