On June 20th, drama on the Han Solo film project began when Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired from the project. All of you know how i feel about that decision and how this is going to be lots of pressure towards the new director. Today, on June 22nd, Disney and Lucasfilm have officially announced that Ron Howard will now be directing the Han Solo film. To be honest, this director pick is really bad and cheap for this film. Here are a few reasons as to why Ron Howard is the wrong choice for directing this film.
Besides Rush, the director hasn’t made a good film in years
In 2013, Ron Howard made Rush, which was critically praised and given positive reviews. Other than Rush, the director hasn’t made another good film in modern day. His more recent films like In The Heart Of The Sea, The Da-Vinci Code and The Dilemma have been trashed by both critics and audience members. His latest film Inferno, which came out last year, received very negative reviews but still made money in the box office.
2. He will stick to the plan when making the film
The major reason why Disney and Lucasfilm probably hired Ron Howard to direct the film is because they know he will stick with their plan rather than trying to make something from his point of view. According to THR, “Howard is considered to be a safe choice to complete the task…”. The keyword in this article is “safe choice”, which should tell you the true reason why the company decided to hire him.
3. His style of directing doesn’t match the tone for the film
Looking at his films, Ron Howard likes to make movies that have big action scenes or a tone of drama and mystery. Han Solo should not be a drama or mystery. The film, in my mind, needs to be comedic, adventurous and character driven. Just because he can provide big action scenes, it doesn't mean that he is the man for the job. By that logic, that means Michael Bay should have been a frontrunner for this project.
To wrap it up, Ron Howard is a bad choice to direct this film. I hope that he doesn’t do massive changes to what Lord and Miller have already done and that he just continues where they have left off in the production. That probably won’t be the case when you take into account what ideas the studio probably have for this film now that Lord and Miller have been removed from the project. Let’s just hope that the force is strong in this project.
