Disney & Pixar has had a great track record for making great animated films. Their animation styles have improved dramatically over the past few years. These films also deliver truck loads of money at the box office. However, there is one franchise that is not mentioned too often when talking about Pixar films, which is the Cars franchise. In opinion, the Cars franchise has been treated the least amount of care compared to the Pixar films like Zootopia, Finding Dory and Toy Story 3. Now, we have the 3rd film to the franchise, Cars 3. Is the film any good? Does it end the franchise on a good note? Let's find out.
Cars 3 tells the story of Lightning McQueen(voiced by Owen Wilson), who is now a little older and wiser as a racer. His life is taken in a different direction when Jackson Storm(voiced by Armie Hammer), a new high-tech racer, joins the racing season. With these new generation of cars joining the racing season, McQueen must decide if he wants to continue racing or enter retirement.
Cars 3, in my opinion, is the best of the franchise. It is a massive improvement over the other two films and seems to have put a lot more care and thought into it. The first thing that has improved is the animation. The animation in this film is very detailed and beautiful to look at. It brings the Cars characters to life and makes the audiences feel like they are on the race track with Lightning McQueen.
The other thing that has improved is the storytelling. When it comes to Pixar films, they like to bring meaningful and powerful messages. However, besides the first Cars, this franchise hasn't really given a powerful message for audiences to connect to. The first Cars gets a pass because they had a decent message about how sometimes you should slow down and appreciate the things around you. However, in Cars 3, there is a really nice message of never giving up and noticing someone else's talents.
Even though the film is an improvement, it still has a few problems. The first one being that Jackson Storm doesn't really have a whole lot of screentime. It would have been better if he had more screentime so that the film could have time to build up the rivalry between McQueen and Storm. Also, the first act of this film is very generic and boring. It doesn't flow as well as the second and third acts of the film.
Other than that, I still had a lot of fun watching Cars 3 and was pleasantly surprised. It is the best of the franchise in my opinion and is worth seeing in theaters with your friends and little kids. Also, the short film they played before the film was very cute and adorable. I won't say what it is about, but needless to say it was pretty cute.
Cars 3 Overall Score: 7.5/10=75%
Reasoning: Has great animation and storytelling. Is massive improvement over the other two films.
