With Universal Pictures now doing their own universe called Dark Universe, they have released this weekend their first chapter in this monster universe, The Mummy. The film stars Tom Cruise, Sofia

Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Russell Crowe. Is the film any good? Does it start the universe off on a good note? Let's find out.

The Mummy tells the story of Ahmanet(played by Sofia Boutella), an ancient princess who was brought out of her crypt from beneath the desert by Nick Morton(played by Tom Cruise) and Jenny Halsey(played by Annabelle Wallis). Now that she is awakened, she now will reclaim what she had lost thousands of years ago.

The film delivered some very interesting concepts for the universe going forward and had some good performances from the main leads. Tom Cruise seemed very committed to this film and delivered a decent performance to his character. Sofia Boutella did a great job playing the iconic Mummy. She brought the physical appearance and the personality to the character. Russell Crowe also did a good job playing his character. I won't reveal who he plays in the film because that would be considered a spoiler.

As I said, the film delivers interesting concepts for the universe. But, there lies the huge problem with this film. The film relies a lot on setting up the universe than rater focusing on the story of The Mummy. It was something I personally saw coming a mile away and was pretty disappointed that it happened. Also, the first act of the film contains a lot of background, which gets very boring very fast. It could have been condensed a lot smaller and more straight to the point.

Another negative aspect of the film is that some of the characters are pointless and serve no purpose to the story. Colonel Greenway(played by Courtney B. Vance) served absolutely no purpose in the film and was never needed. Also, Russell Crowe's character could have easily been removed from the film and placed in a different one in this universe.

Besides that, I still will say that I had some fun watching The Mummy and that I remain interested with this universe going forward. The film could have been a lot better in execution and in storytelling, but it was still entertaining to watch. I would wait till this film comes out on Blu-ray and pass on it this weekend.

The Mummy's Overall Score: 6.1/10=61%

Reasoning: It is an entertaining film to watch, but comes with problems in storytelling.
